Each person is to bring at least one wrapped gift (value $5.00-$10.00) and a small appetizer or dessert.   If you can afford to bring 2 gifts, please do, so that anyone new or who doesn’t see this email, will be able to participate in the gift exchange.

This Wednesday, September 28, 2011, we’re having a guest speaker, Dave Wallace, Director, Public Policy Advocacy-Community Impact from United Way of Broward County.

Community Aspirations Conversations

As part of our Campaign for the Common Good and participation with United Way Worldwide’s Income Mobilization Initiative, we are holding Community Conversations across Broward County.  We want to gain a better understanding of people’s aspirations for our community; their concerns, hopes and vision for our future.   This forum will provide participants an opportunity to give voice to those aspirations and concerns, and engage them in finding solutions. These conversations will, also, help guide us in building strategies to engage the people of Broward County to realize those aspirations.

The Format:

The Community Conversation is an informal gathering of no more than 15-20 individuals, sharing a meal in a familiar setting.   We will guide the conversations, but primarily listen and record the discussions of the group.

 Ground Rules:

  1. 1.       It is a ‘kitchen table’ conversation.  Everyone participates, but no one dominates.
  2. 2.       There are no right answers.
  3. 3.       Keep an open mind; listen carefully to other participants and try to understand their point of view.
  4. 4.       It is ok to disagree, but remain respectful of each other.
  5. 5.       Have fun!

Conversation Questions:

  1. 1.       What kind of community do you want?  What are your hopes and aspirations for your community?
  2. 2.       What are the obstacles/roadblocks to your hopes for your community?
  3. 3.       What can or should be done to solve these problems?
  4. 4.       What can be done to improve the financial stability of individuals and families?

This is an opportunity to make yourself heard so come join the conversation.  Food will be provided.

Last week the topic was

“Name 3 things you want in a Boyfriend and 3 deal-breakers.

This week we’re going to list

“3 things we bring to the table and 3 things we need to work on.

Same as last week, we’ll write them down, put them in a box and then read them anonymously and discuss.

Should be a fun time.

The topic this Wednesday, August 24, 2011 is self talking.

In the movies, talking to oneself is a way of conveying craziness, but in real life, everyone talks to themselves.   This is the way we think and sometimes we do it outloud.  Patterns of negative or positive self-talk often start in childhood and color the views we have of ourselves through out our lives.  But, it’s never too late to change negative thought patterns into positive thought patterns.

From the Power of Positive Thinking, to The Secret, to self affirming statements in churches, support groups and 12-step programs to Aibeleen’s child-rearing techniques in the movie The Help (I is kind, I is smart, I is important) self talking is at the basis of changing people’s views of themsleves.

For this group, I would like each person to write down a negative thought they frequently have of themselves.   You don’t have to share this, but I want you to have it written down so you can evaluate yourself.

We’re going to talk about how to change that negative thought into a positive thought and I’m going to have an exercise for you to do.

Come join the conversation and fun.
