Roy Courtnay is a long-time con man who manipulates others into giving him access to their finances through a string of deception and false identities, along with his business partner Vincent, who acts out as his accountant. In 2009, his latest target is Betty McLeish, a former history teacher at Oxford who lost her husband a year ago and has savings in excess of two million pounds. Betty also reveals that she is suffering from a series of minor strokes that may kill her within a year.

During a holiday in Berlin, the plan appears threatened when Betty’s grandson Steven reveals that, according to Soviet records, ‘Roy Courtnay’ was killed in 1948 by a Nazi he was tracking, but Roy explains that he is actually Hans Taub, Roy’s German translator, and that he stole Roy’s identity so that he could leave Germany and reinvent himself.
