DIRECTED BY THE LEGENDARY BOB FOSSE
In Berlin in 1931, American cabaret singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) meets academic Brian Roberts (Michael York), who is finishing his university studies. Despite Brian’s confusion over his sexuality, the pair become lovers, but the arrival of the wealthy and decadent playboy Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem) complicates matters for them both. This love triangle plays out against the rise of the Nazi party and the collapse of the Weimar Republic. Director: Bob Fosse

WHY IS “CABARET” RELEVANT TODAY?
1. What happens to a nation when the liberties, civil rights and freedoms of minorities are restricted by a bigoted racist national government?
2. What happens to a nation when its top leaders profess hatred towards immigrants, foreigners, homosexuals and Non-Christians —and nobody in his political party dares to question him?
3. What happens when a nation’s top leader uses constant hate filled, sexist, racist and Anti-Semitic propaganda messages to the masses?
The answer to all of these questions can be found today, to some degree, in our own backyard. But, the country I speak of is GERMANY in the 1930s, before and during the rise of Hitler’s Nazi party – which contains all the elements of the above described. This special movie, Cabaret, is more than just a gay classic, its an important historical reminder of what should never happen again.
