This Wednesday, July 12, 2017 we will have a guest speaker, Debra Annane to speak on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).
Debra Annane (AN nan), MA, MPH, RYT has worked in the field of behavioral medicine and stress management for the past decade. She has been a yoga practitioner since 1987, is a certified yoga instructor, and has been a student of Zen Buddhism since 2001. In 2015 she ordained as an urban Buddhist priest. Debra has also trained extensively in secular mindfulness-based interventions and teaches mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and similar programs to people coping with chronic illness, stress and distress. Her work in MBSR is based on the evidence-based, secular mindfulness intervention developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness, Healthcare and Society. Developed from the teachings of yoga and Buddhism, but having no faith-based components, MBSR has been proven scientifically to alleviate or improve a wide-range of ailments often associated with chronic illness, from anxiety and depression to pain management. Debra serves as an adjunct instructor of mindfulness in public health and medicine in the University of Miami Department of Public Health Sciences, teaches MBSR to the general public, patients, healthcare practitioners, military veterans, and others, and works full time at the Miami Research Center of Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health, where she manages a number of large nationally funded HIV/HCV related research projects. Her interests in public health and behavioral medicine include health disparities, disease prevention, health promotion, and fostering community support for those suffering with chronic ailments.
