The topic this Wednesday October 14, 2015 is Rock Hudson.
October 2nd, 2015, marks the 30th anniversary of Rock Hudson’s death. We’ll discuss the importance of his saga on AIDS and its impact on you.
Rock Hudson was one of Hollywood’s top leading men of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Standing 6’5” he was the epitome of all-American virility. Yet behind that façade he was gay. Hudson was diagnosed with AIDS in June, 1984 but kept it a secret. In 1985 he was still a leading man and had a recurring role in television’s #1 hit show ‘Dynasty’. In February 1985 he gave leading star Linda Evans a romantic kiss. It was revealed that Hudson had AIDS in June 1985 and the kiss became the center of controversy. At the time it was believed that HIV was present in saliva and it was unknown if it could be transmitted by kissing.
It would still be nearly 2 more years and 20,000 American deaths before President Reagan made his first public speech on AIDS, but Hudson made AIDS front page news in nearly every publication for the first time. AIDS became a household word and Hudson had become its “Face”.
