Love and Other Drugs stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a sort of sleazy salesman (Jamie) with a killer smile, personality; a lady’s man extraordinare, and Anne Hathaway as a hot young woman (Maggie) with stage-1 Parkinson’s Disease. Do we hear Love Story remake?
Of course men would want to screw her (she’s hot), but could anyone actually fall in love with someone with Parkinson’s Disease? Maggie thinks not, accepts this, and therefore treats herself like a one-night trick. The scope and seriousness of Parkinson’s Disease comes into focus when Maggie attends a Parkinson’s Disease group meeting and we see and hear about stages 2-4 of this disease.
But Jamie keeps coming back for more and Maggie sees things in Jamie that he doesn’t see in himself. Yeah we know how Hollywood will play this out and it is predictable, but I do see parallels between Parkinson’s and HIV/AIDS and how Maggie views herself and how some of us may view ourselves. So it was a movie I coule relate to.
And of course there’s Jake Gyllenhaal’s butt (4-stars, just for that)which he shows off a number of times in this movie. If he goes to the grave with that untapped, that would be a travesty.
But my favorite line (and if you’ve been to the Wednesday group, you’ll know why) is when Jamie’s little brother Josh is arguing and tells his wife (on the phone), “Stop being a f*cking bitch”. Oh I used the “you” word, let me rephrase that; “I feel you should stop being a f*cking bitch”.
All in all, everyone enjoyed this movie, but it is a typical date chick flick.

Hey Steve,
Just had to say “thanks” and “nice” that you go to all the trouble to post reviews and all the many things you do to keep people involved and informed with the group. We should all be grateful for you as moderator. Thanks 🙂
