Today is World AIDS Day.
The 3rd annual Candlelight Vigil will be held tonight at Hagen Park (2020 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors) starting at 7:00 PM and ending at Georgie ALibi’s Parking Lot around 9:00 PM. I urge you to attend this. I will still hold group (I believe it is my duty) but I will meet you over at the parking lot after group.
Observed December 1 each year. Dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection.
World AIDS Day was first conceived in August 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Program on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Jonathan Mann, Director of the Global Programme on AIDS (now known as UNAIDS). Dr. Mann liked the concept, approved it, and agreed with the recommendation that the first observance of World AIDS Day should be 1 December, 1988.
The date of December 1 was selected because it was believed it was a dead spot in the news calendar, far enough removed from the November elections and soon enough before the Christmas holidays, thus a perfect period to get news media coverage and raise awareness.
